The purpose of this introductory chapter is to introduce the development of language teaching and learning in Vietnam and Cambodia. It first presents the rationales for innovation in language teaching in Vietnam and Cambodia. Then, it provides an overview of language teaching in the context of these countries. The authors also discuss top-down policies in Vietnam, such as the Language Project 2020, and the new curriculum framework in Cambodia for general education as well as bottom-up innovations. The final section of this chapter presents a summary of each chapter in this volume. It orients future innovations by integrating AI tools into language classrooms and ensuring the sustainability of language education in Vietnam and Cambodia.
